JOHNNY LOVES JOHANN
THE CHALLENGE
Johnny Loves Johann brings together violinist Johnny Gandelsman and four choreographers to reinterpret Bach's Cello Suites through music and contemporary dance.
The challenge was to develop a creative direction and visual language that captured the relationship between classical structure and contemporary movement, expressing the production's humanity while connecting it with audiences and prospective presenters.
THE WORK
Attending rehearsals during a residency on Martha's Vineyard provided firsthand insight into the production as it took shape. Observing the relationship between music, movement and the performers revealed a compelling tension between Bach's mathematical precision and the warmth, vulnerability and spontaneity of human expression.
That tension became the foundation for A Frame of Reflection, a visual concept built around the idea of form meeting feeling. At its center, an abstract J–heart–J emblem uses rounded geometry and Gestalt principles of closure and continuation to create a contemplative window into the deeply personal experience at the heart of the production.
THE SOCIAL CAMPAIGN
The visual identity was expressed primarily through a series of social media designs promoting the production's performances. Intimate photography was framed within J–heart–J windows, with the diagonals of the performers' limbs and violin bow guiding the eye through compositions that echoed the movement on stage.
Within this structured framework, skin, gesture and organic movement introduced intimacy and imperfection. Classical serif typography contrasted with the contemporary emblem and bold sans-serif lettering, while a warm color palette infused the visual system with a sense of optimism and possibility. Each composition revealed a different relationship between the performers, creating a recognizable visual language while celebrating their individual artistry.
THE PRESENTER MATERIALS
To introduce Johnny Loves Johann to prospective presenters, the identity was extended into a double-sided presentation sheet distributed at special viewings of the production.
Combining compelling imagery with essential production information, the piece provided a tangible introduction to the show, supporting conversations about future performances and touring opportunities.
THE MERCHANDISE
A playful T-shirt and enamel pin design introduced another dimension of Johnny Loves Johann, capturing the joyful spirit and personality of the show.
A raw illustration style combined with bold typography gave the project a more informal expression, creating something audiences can wear and take beyond the performance.
THE IMPACT
Giving creative collaboration a visual voice.
Johnny Loves Johann demonstrates how creative direction can become an extension of the artistic collaboration itself. Experiencing the production as it developed informed a visual language that reflected the spirit of the performers and the work they were creating together.
The resulting visual language gave the production a recognizable presence beyond the stage, inviting audiences into its creative world while introducing the collaboration to prospective presenters and supporting opportunities for future performances.
